Office packages for free - worth knowing (part 2)

Service Business

Today it is difficult to imagine running a business without the help of computers. IT infrastructure is the basis for the efficient functioning of the business. However, there is a drawback - the cost of implementing and maintaining the whole. The equipment can of course be leased or used copies - here there is a lot of room for the resourceful. In the case of software, savings can also be found. You just need to know how to do it. Of course, there are pirate programs out of the question - you can pay huge penalties for using illegal software in your company. You can find many free alternatives to paid software on the web that offer similar, if not identical, possibilities. In this article, we will discuss office suites.

Free alternatives - office packages

A word processor and spreadsheet application are the most fundamental software for businesses. Without it, it is difficult to carry out everyday affairs - do documentation, analyze expenses and many, many other activities. As in the case of operating systems, the dominance of Windows developers can also be noticed in the subject of office suites.

Microsoft Office, containing, among others, a Word text editor, an Excel spreadsheet editor and PowerPoint for creating presentations, is the most popular software of this type. On the one hand, it offers many possibilities, including work in the cloud (Office 365), and on the other, it requires a lot of investment - licenses for company computers cost up to several thousand zlotys. For this reason, it's worth taking a look at what free alternatives other manufacturers offer.

Office packages - types

The most serious competitor to Microsoft's software is the OpenOffice package. It contains all the necessary elements - the Writer text editor, Calc spreadsheet program, Impress - the equivalent of PowerPoint, Draw drawing application, support for Base and Math databases, application for creating mathematical formulas. An important feature of OpenOffice is its availability on free Linux kernel systems.

Other office suites that offer similar capabilities include:

  • LibreOffice,

  • Ashampoo Office,

  • Caligra Suite,

  • Lotus Symphony,

  • SoftMaker FreeOffice.

Not so long ago, a serious competitor appeared for Microsoft Office 365 working in the cloud. Google has released a free office suite that allows you to create five types of files - Document, Sheet, Image, Form and Presentation. The applications work from the browser level and are saved on the Google drive, available for free to anyone who has an account on this portal. Most importantly, disk space can be shared with multiple people, giving them the ability to edit files. Google Docs offers an extremely convenient comment and chat system, enabling contact with users editing specific text. All files are saved on an ongoing basis, which significantly reduces the risk of data loss. In addition, users have extremely convenient access to shared resources - just log in to your Google account from any browser to be able to read and edit documents immediately. The services of this company are the future of the Internet - nowadays, separate programs are being abandoned and instead of native applications working in the cloud and accessible from the browser level. Google has two priorities - first: simplify, and second: standardize. The only drawback of Google products is the limited functions of the editors - there are much less of them than in the Microsoft package. They will not satisfy demanding specialists, but they will suffice to perform basic tasks in the company.
