Dress code in a small company - obligatory attire for work

Service Business

People want to express their individuality with their outfits. However, the employer may require the employee to comply with certain dress code rules at the workplace. The introduction of uniform clothing in the enterprise has one main goal - visual identification. A customer entering a showroom of a well-known brand immediately notices where the salesman is. If he has any questions, he will know who to turn to. Designing elegant jackets for employees of bank branches proves the professionalism of a financial institution. Should entrepreneurs introduce a dress code to small businesses? What benefits can they achieve? Can employees refuse to dress in a certain way?

Dress code and the provisions of the Labor Code

Pursuant to article 104 of the Labor Code, the employer may define the requirements for a specific dress code in the internal work regulations. Employees must be informed of the introduction of dress codes. The rules of the dress code may also be presented in a specially prepared instruction and employment contract. At the stage of introducing a newly hired person to work, he should be instructed what items of clothing are approved and what should not be worn in the office. If the employer introduced uniform uniforms, he should provide the new employee with a complete outfit.

Of course, the employer does not have complete freedom in setting the dress code. It should not exceed the limit of good taste. Article 111 of the Labor Code states that the requirements relating to the manner of dressing should respect the dignity and other personal rights of employees.

Dress code rules should be followed. Pursuant to article 108 of the Labor Code, the employer may impose sanctions (including fines) on persons who will not use a certain type of dress. If employees wear corporate attire and are not willing to wear it, the employer may:

  • lower the discretionary bonus,

  • to reprimand or admonish,

  • disciplinary dismissal of the employee - only in the event that failure to maintain the corporate dress threatens the interests of the enterprise.

It should also be borne in mind that certain workstations may require work clothes, which are introduced to ensure an appropriate level of safety. If an employee does not wear appropriate clothing, he / she is breaking health and safety regulations. However, you can also be fired immediately.

Small business dress code - what rules can be introduced?

The employer should adapt the rules of dressing to the industry in which he conducts business. For example, restaurant employees must comply with legal requirements. In the internal work regulations, the dress code should therefore include health and safety rules and guidelines imposed by the County Sanitary and Epidemiological Stations (Sanepid).

Employees who have direct contact with the client should dress neatly and appropriately for the job. They will contribute to shaping the image of the company in the eyes of consumers. A bank employee should not wear skirts that are too short or too long. A clerk at the grocery store, on the other hand, would look quite strange in a jacket and white shirt. The dress code must therefore be adapted to the specifics of the business.

Should a dress code be introduced if employees do not have direct contact with the client? Yes of course. As a result, the employed will identify with the company and perhaps integrate with it. This can affect the sharing of values that are valued by the employer, increase productivity and motivation. Employee commitment often results from a sense of community, and the same outfit will certainly ensure it.

Dress code in a small company - the boss is an example!

In a small business, the entrepreneur usually has direct contact with all employees. For this reason, the effective implementation of the dress code often depends on the attitude of the employer. If the owner instructs the employed persons that they should wear T-shirts with the company's logo while serving the client, and he does not follow the rules he has established, he is not a good example for his employees. It is true that employees should bear in mind that the boss does not have to comply with dress code. However, if they respect them, none of the employed people will dare to break the established rules. Since the boss complies with the dress code, the employee has to adapt to it even more.
