How much does it cost to start a blog? Everything worth knowing

Service Business

Do you dream of starting your own blog? Would you like to share your skills, insights or knowledge with others? Do you think about it often, but don't know how to go about it? Wondering how to get started or just how much does it cost to start a blog? The most common view among Internet users is that starting and running a blog is actually free. But is this really true? What expenses is it worth spending money on at the beginning?

Technology, i.e. domain and hosting

Of course, if you're just checking to see if blogging is for you, there's no point in spending money on a domain or hosting. There are blogging platforms on the internet. Many famous bloggers started right there. For starters, this is a good option to learn the ins and outs of blogging and find out if it suits you.

However, if you have the ambition to run a website with your own name from the beginning, you need to invest in a domain and hosting. The first term is a unique name for your blog, which can also (but need not) serve as its url. Domain prices vary widely. Their amount can be checked on the Internet. You must remember that the domain is not permanently purchased, it must be renewed. At the same time, it is worth paying attention to the promotion of the domain type for free, because renewal may later cost much more than with a domain, e.g. for PLN 10.

Hosting is the server where your blog is hosted so that other internet users can view it. There are plenty of hosting companies on the market. When it comes to choosing a domain plus hosting, the fee is about PLN 200 per year.

The look of your blog

When all the technical matters are over, it's time for the graphic design. Everyone would like their blog to be the most beautiful, but graphic services are not cheap. Therefore, at the beginning, in order to save money, it is worth using solutions available on the Internet.

Here, ready-made templates come in handy.

Most of them use the free ones available on WordPress. However, many of them are not responsive or have bugs. And if one is multifunctional, it is used by the most people. So if you want your blog to stand out, you probably shouldn't use this option. Especially since there is another one, which also does not require spending a fortune.

You can use the theme databases - where there are many templates and graphics that we can buy for several to several dozen dollars. It is worth investing such an amount if we want our blog to be readily read and liked by the recipients from the very beginning. It is not a big expense, and at the start it is definitely enough.

Paid platform, i.e. how much does it cost to start a blog in practice?

Another very important step when we do not use ready-made solutions is choosing a platform for the blog. The most frequently chosen option is WordPress. Often, hosting companies offer easy installation of this system. It happens that after installing everything, you still have to arrange all the modules on the page so that they look perfect as you want. That is why an IT specialist can come in handy here. There are two forms of this website. One is Wordpress.org where everything is free, but you must have your own hosting, while the other - WordPress.com - offers a free package with hosting for $ 18 / year or a paid package with free hosting.

Logo and other graphic additions

For a blog to stand out, it needs a logo. This is a unique sign that will be equated with your blog and possibly with you. However, you don't necessarily have to have them at the start. A graphic designer can take up to several thousand to design a logo, which is probably not the point. You can design the first sign yourself, e.g.in the Canva.com app or any other easy online program. You can also use free logotype generators.

How much does it cost to start a blog? - summary

Taking into account all the options presented above, if we want our blog to be different from others and have relatively advanced functions, we should invest in it at the beginning about PLN 400-500. This amount includes: domain, hosting, template and possible IT support.
