The beginning of work in a new company is important and stressful not only from the perspective of the new employee, but also from the perspective of the people who work in the company on a daily basis. They are also curious about what awaits them, what the new person will be like, what he will bring to the company, whether it will be easy to get along with it. Although in many cases the process of accepting a new employee to the team is smooth, it is also different. How do employees accept new people in the team?

When superiors announce that a new employee will appear in the company, his first days in the team arouse the curiosity and stress not only of the main stakeholder, but also of other team members. If the department cooperates very smoothly, everyone likes each other, we wonder if the new person will get along with the rest, or will not spoil the atmosphere. Everyone expects who will contribute to the department and what person it will be. This is an important moment for the entire company.

However, it is completely different in the case of an employee who already has professional experience, and differently in the case of an employee who is just starting his professional career.

In the first case, it is often easier, because such a person knows what the industry looks like, it is possible that he or she already knows someone from the team, has learned about the organizational culture of other companies and often knows what does and what does not. An employee who has never worked before may be withdrawn, a little more embarrassed, it is also possible that he will not know from the beginning how he should behave, what to say, etc.

How do employees accept new people in the team?

It cannot be denied that employees do not always accept new people in the team with open arms. It happens that an employee can immediately sense aversion towards himself, although no one has actually met him yet.

It often happens that the team seems hostile and closed at first, but over time the new employee becomes part of the group by itself and is welcomed by the rest of the group. Initially, everyone is "new", but that time passes, whether we like it or not.

Each of us was new once, so treating such a person in advance, doubting his abilities, treating him as a fifth wheel on a cart, will not do us any good. This attitude is demotivating from the very beginning. If a new employee does not feel well, he or she regrets joining the company and coming to the office becomes a chore. Nobody wants to feel this way - so why treat others like that? Fortunately, many people have just such an approach and want the inexperienced person to feel at their best and quickly catch the rhythm of work.

Sometimes employees want to help a new person too much - they offer help in even the simplest matter, keep asking if everything is okay, how is it going. This is not always a good practice as the employee may feel downright cornered. However, remember that help is often useful and refusing it completely is also not a good idea. Sometimes you can see that someone is not coping, but at the same time he is ashamed to ask for advice, then it is definitely worth taking the initiative.

Prejudice to new people on the team

Unfortunately, it may happen that employees accept new people in the team very negatively from the very beginning. Why is this happening?

Often, employees are angry that a former employee has been dismissed and blame the new person for taking their place. This is absurd, because it has nothing to do with dismissal. She just turned out to be the best candidate and she probably doesn't even know why the previous employee left the position.

Mrs. Małgorzata has worked at AYA for many years. Everyone liked her very much and treated her like someone close to her. However, Małgorzata had a problem with learning new methods of work, she was reluctant to change, even opposed to them, which slowed down the work of the entire company. After another reprimand, the boss decided to dismiss Mrs. Małgorzata, which all employees accepted with great regret. Mr. Jakub was hired to replace Mrs. Małgorzata. Although he is a nice man who can do a lot, the team was unpleasant to him from the beginning. Mr.Jakub had no idea why this was happening and it took him a long time to find out. Unfortunately, he couldn't help it, and he had to wait out the period of reluctance.

The reason for reluctance can also be rumors about salary. Somewhere, it is not known from whom, employees learn that the new employee will earn a lot more. In fact, they are not even sure if this will actually happen, but they feel angry and for some reason decide to show it to someone who probably has no idea why employees approach her with reluctance.

Prejudice can also stem from jealousy. The employee finds that someone is overly competent, is a threat and will start spreading unfavorable rumors - it is easy to come up with something that will alienate the team at the start - maybe it's the boss's cousin, maybe he earns more, although it's his first job, or maybe it's the member's wife a board that does not even know their duties? Information sucked from a finger can spread around the company at the speed of light.

The negative attitude of employees may change over time - the rumors will turn out to be false, and the new employee will be competent and very friendly. However, a bad start like this could have an impact on future relationships. Everything is fixable, though the distaste may remain.

It is worth giving every new employee a chance and preparing the team for their arrival. This is a unique situation for everyone, there is no point in making it more stressful. The new person will eventually become a member of the team, and for the atmosphere it is better if it happens sooner rather than later.
