Many of us have goals - long-term ones that are closer in time. However, if we fail to achieve them, our frustration grows, we are disappointed, and our motivation to act decreases. How to set goals so as not to make a mistake and make achieving them as possible? Please read this article where we will try to answer this question.

Why do we set goals for ourselves?

Certainly, setting specific goals makes us more motivated to act. Because we know exactly what we want to achieve, most often we also know the steps that can bring us closer to implementation. Thanks to this, we want to improve our life, not only private, but also professional, and to facilitate certain processes, if possible. We do not wander in the fog, we are aware that even small tasks are important to us. For many of us, this feeling is important to stay fully focused on what we are doing. Goals can make us aware of what is most important in life for us, and what activities that occupy our time, we can safely let go of without any harm.

How to set goals?

We sometimes set ourselves a goal that we fail to achieve. If this happens repeatedly, we become discouraged and stop believing that it can work. It is possible that we make some mistakes that prevent us from achieving our goals. How to set goals so that we can achieve them? How to approach this task?

What do you actually want to do?

Setting a goal alone can be difficult. Sometimes we don't really know what we want. However, there are several ways to find out what we really care about. One of them is to write down all the goals that come to mind. They may be more or less forward-looking, it doesn't matter. Let us leave this list for a while, say a week, then go back to it and cross out what we consider to be less important. If we are still convinced that there are too many goals, leave the list for another week and come back to it again. Thanks to this, after some time the most important ones that we care about the most will stay with us.

We can also try to build lists of goals several times without looking at the previous ones. After some time, it is worth comparing them and checking what is repeating on them, and then focusing on these points.

Finding your goal is not enough

It may seem that since we already know how to set goals, our knowledge is complete, now it is enough to write down the selected points and start implementing them. However, this is not as easy as it may seem. Initially, each goal should be broken down into prime factors. Let's add even the smallest step to them that can help in their implementation. Let's include everything that comes to mind on the list. The road to implementation is very much needed in order not to get lost. Mere setting a goal is not enough if we have no idea what to do to get closer to it. Then it is often just an empty slogan.

Divide the goals into categories

It may also be helpful to divide your goals into categories. Thanks to this, they seem more orderly, and we can designate those spheres on which we mainly want to focus. What could it look like? Examples of categories could be: work, home, family, health, finance, appearance. Sometimes we consciously avoid some of them - unfortunately, more and more often it is health that we put aside. However, if we assign goals to this category, we may be able to pay more attention to it, and non-compliance will tire us in some way, which in this case may push us to act.

Bet on the SMART (ER) method

Achieving goals is not always successful. There are many reasons for this, and it often turns out that the goal is not real or specific. Therefore, it is worth checking the SMART or SMARTER method to evaluate our list. What is it about?

S - specific - the goal must be specific, we should understand it without any problems, the point is not to write: I will lose weight, but to specify precisely: I want to weigh less by 15 kilograms.
M - measurable - we should define what will be a sign that the goal is being achieved or that we have already achieved it. It is worth setting such points at the very beginning, so that it does not turn out that the goal is long behind us, and we are still doing something in this direction, although we could direct our energy to another place.
A - achievable - achievable - it should be checked whether the goal is really important to us and whether we are truly motivated to achieve it.
R - realistic - real - the goal must be real. We won't fly even if it's on our list. If we know in advance that we will fail to achieve something, just cross out the goal and forget about it.
T - time-bound - defined in time - if we do not set even an approximate goal, it is difficult to mobilize ourselves to start activities. So let's try to set a time in which we want to achieve a given goal in each case.
+
E - exciting - exciting - the goal should excite us. If he is indifferent to us, we will not feel like spending time with him. Perhaps, if it does not arouse our emotions, it is not important to us at all?
R - recorder - recorded - it is believed that the target should also be recorded. First of all, when we do it, it will be harder for us to forget about it, and the fact that it is on the list motivates us to start implementing it.
Setting goals isn't easy - that's for sure. You should spend more time on this activity to make it feasible. However, if we do this, it will be much easier for us to strive for it. Thanks to this, we feel fulfilled, our self-confidence increases, and life can become much simpler.
