MBA studies - who are they for and how to choose them well?
Higher education is usually an opportunity to get additional, directional education, with the hope of a better position and earnings. One of the options in this case is MBA studies, which - apart from knowledge - also give graduates a lot of practical skills. So what are MBA studies, who are they for and how to choose the best ones?
Master of Business Administration
MBA is an abbreviation of the title obtained by people who have completed this type of course - i.e. Master of Business Administration. MBA studies were organized for the first time in the United States in the early 1950s. Their goal was to educate specialized staff, like graduates from the first American business school, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Graduates of such courses learned not only the necessary theory, but most of all practical skills necessary to perform a specific profession. In Poland, MBA studies appeared in the early 1990s.
MBA degrees are organized into several grades, each of which corresponds to a specific skill and work experience. And yes, the Basic MBA is a title that can be earned by professional managers. EMBA, or MBA executives, can be obtained by managers with longer professional experience, i.e. middle and upper class. GEMBA, or global executives MBA is dedicated to managers working in international institutions.
In addition, there are also thematic MBA titles, which are aimed at managerial staff with a specific specialization. Therefore, this type of training can be used by, inter alia, financiers, HR and IT employees.
MBA studies - the university is unequal
In line with international standards, the best MBA colleges are located in the United States. This does not mean, however, that it is not possible to find a good program a little closer to Poland. Also in our country, you can find universities that offer courses at a high level. So - how to choose them?
First of all, it is worth paying attention to the certificates that the university has. The most famous of them are the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS), The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) or the Association of MBAs (AMBA). Before the university receives any of the certificates, it is thoroughly checked in terms of the level of the teaching program, starting from the design phase. Moreover, such control is not a one-off - the certificate may be lost, so the university must maintain a really high level of education.
In addition to the appropriate scope of education, it is also necessary to keep it up-to-date. As already mentioned, MBA studies are not only theory, but also - and even above all - practice. As they are often intended for very dynamically developing specializations - such as IT - timeliness is extremely important in this case. It is worth paying attention to whether the selected course offers the possibility of trips - both domestic and foreign - to various types of conferences or internships to specialized centers. In such places, focused only on a given industry, you can be sure that the knowledge transferred is "on time".
At the same time, trips are not only the most up-to-date knowledge, but also - really the most practical. When leaving, study participants have the opportunity to face real problems that may stand in their way during their work and actually face them.
When choosing studies, it is also worth paying attention to the mode in which they are conducted. Good universities usually offer their students a full-time or part-time model. The second option is most often chosen, as students are not only students in this case, but are also heavily involved in their professional career. More and more universities also offer remote (partially) courses. Thanks to e-learning platforms, participants can do specific classes on their own, at any time and place. This option also allows you to easily share training materials, which the student can also use when he wants.
Staff and students at MBA studies
In the university, in addition to the above-mentioned aspects, people are also extremely important. And it is not only about the obvious staff of lecturers, but also - about the students themselves.
As already indicated, the staff should include both people perfectly educated in the field of their activities, and practitioners. Therefore, when deciding to choose a university, one should pay attention to whether there are also people working in the profession and using appropriate techniques. The aforementioned conferences or internships should also be conducted by people with many years of solid experience.
When it comes to students, you can also find a tip here when choosing a university. It is worth remembering that MBA studies are intended for specialists - managers in various industries and with different experience. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to what requirements are imposed on candidates for students. If they are too low, the rate may turn out to be too little specialized or too low.
As you can see, MBA studies can be a really good idea for career development and a chance for promotion. However, it is worth paying attention to several aspects before a future graduate decides to choose a specific course.
