We often do not realize how much we need it and how often we reach for it. Sugar addiction is becoming more common and it is affecting many people. How to check if this is also the case with us? It is worth carrying out a sugar detox.

Is it easy to get addicted to sugar?

Sugar is ubiquitous. We can find it not only in cookies and drinks, but also in ketchups, sauces, yoghurts, and even cold cuts. We often treat it as a way to improve our mood, because after a difficult day, nothing is as good as eating a bar of delicious chocolate. We live under the conviction that sugar cannot be dangerous and therefore we do not notice that it can have an effect on us similar to drugs or alcohol. Some people compare sugar addiction to cocaine addiction, and it doesn't have to be an exaggerated view.

Although the body functions properly when it receives 7 grams of sugar, we usually consume more than 20 teaspoons a day! Every year we consume it in really huge amounts. In addition, the use of a bad diet, lack of vitamins, and a bad lifestyle can make us have an even greater and constant desire for something sweet.

We reach for a bar to improve our mood, but it is worth knowing that we will feel even worse just after consuming it. Then we will feel like eating more sweets, which will put us in a vicious circle. Sugar is added to almost everything, and the more we eat it, the more our body needs it. All these factors make it something like the most readily available drug.

What does sugar addiction lead to?

Probably we have heard or said many times that giving up sweets is not an option, because it is a great pleasure and it is not worth denying everything. And if we are to deny ourselves something, it is definitely not sugar. Let us take into account, however, that we also consume it unconsciously, and although we may think that we ate very little during the day, the facts usually turn out to be different. Yes, everyone wants to eat only delicious things, but it is worth realizing that too much sugar can cause obesity, diabetes, insulin resistance, and also have a terrible effect on our teeth.

That sweets cause tooth decay is not a myth made up by moms trying to make their babies eat more healthy foods. Many of us have a panicky fear of the dentist and yet eat a lot of sweet things. Due to such activities, the visit may quickly become a necessity that we will not be able to postpone.

Do manufacturers take advantage of sugar addiction?

It is difficult to talk about overt use, although the ease of sugar addiction is certainly very tempting. Let's say someone, out of concern for his health, completely eliminated him from the diet. If you don't know what the withdrawal effects might be, your symptoms can really be considered serious and distressing. When they stop after consuming a product (for example, if he does not read the ingredients carefully and does not notice the sugar in it), he may think that he was missing one of the ingredients and will come back to the product again when he feels unwell.

However, the above example is just a guess. It is known, however, that producers of sweet drinks often add a lot of salt to them, which - as you know - increases thirst. However, probably no one would like to drink something salty, so the way to improve the taste is plenty of sugar. This is why people who consume such drinks can gain significant weight. In addition, the mixture of salt and sugar will make them willing to use the product again.

How to cure sugar addiction?

To check whether we are addicted to sugar and, above all, for the sake of our own health, it is worth carrying out a sugar detox. Initially, it is a good idea to remove any foods that may contain it from your diet, including fruit and even dairy. However, they are healthy in appropriate portions, so it is worth returning to them after a few days. Then we should slowly and very gradually introduce other products that may contain small amounts of sugar, because - as mentioned at the beginning - the body works well at 7 grams, but you need to supply them. If we cleanse ourselves in this way, start a healthy diet and provide the right number of calories, the craving for sweets will certainly be much smaller or disappear altogether, and we will feel much better and healthier.

Many people find it difficult to stop sweetening coffee and tea. If it is really not easy for us, and these drinks do not seem to taste good without sugar - it is also worth taking the discontinuation gradually. For example, go from two teaspoons (i.e. about 10 grams) to one, gradually reducing the amount of sugar, until the bitter coffee tastes as good as the one in which there was 15 grams of white death.

The key is gradualness, a lack of violence that can make our well-being literally worsen overnight. Then it is easier to be tempted and reach for sweets to improve your mood - however, it is worth knowing that it is a trap, and sugar only seemingly makes us happy.
