Wellness at work
A satisfied employee is a happy boss. Taking care of the health and well-being of employees has a positive effect on their job satisfaction, loyalty and commitment. In addition, it allows you to save on the absence of employees - research shows that employees who use wellness packages at work are less likely to get sick.
Corporate wellness - the answer to the challenges of our times
Wellness in the company is something more than health and safety. Corporate wellness is a new, holistic way of looking at a company where employees are considered the most valuable asset. Health & Productivity Managment ten years ago aroused laughter and indulgence in Poland. Today, in small steps, it becomes an element that builds the company's identity, a factor that decides whether an employee wants to work in a given company or not.
Currently, more and more employees complain about problems with maintaining a balance between their personal and work life. Expectations for work, its role and place in life are changing. Increasingly, employers notice that employees for whom work is part of, and not all, life are more productive, loyal and committed. It turns out that “soft factors” related to the comfort of being in the workplace are as important as professional development.
Corporate wellness - what is it?
The wellness philosophy comes from America. Its founder is considered to be Dr. Halbert Dunn, a doctor who in 1959 proved that the mind and body influence each other. None of the areas can be neglected if we want to be healthy and happy. Corporate wellness strives to achieve a balance between the spheres of body, spirit and mind. Employees are perceived as specific, autonomous units that work together to create one quality. Importantly, wellness in the company also applies to bosses, who should also use packages to develop themselves, take care of their health and find motivation.
Corporate wellness is not an ad hoc action, it is a long-term strategy that aims to permanently change your lifestyle into a healthier, more conscious lifestyle. Its success depends on the motivation of employees, their commitment to the use of the offered packages and readiness for changes. Here, the role of the leader is very important, who, by example, will be able to unite the crew and motivate to action. It is also recommended to introduce monitoring of the functioning of wellness packages in the enterprise. At the same time, you have to be careful not to go overboard - using the packages should be voluntary, you must not punish employees for their passivity, it is better to encourage them positively.
Corporate wellness is also a development of the idea of corporate social responsibility. Over the years, attention has been paid to the impact of business on the surroundings, local community and the environment, neglecting what is closest in the company - the issue of relations between employees and between employees and management. Corporate wellness can be understood as corporate social responsibility directed towards the inside of the enterprise. Its aim is to protect physical and mental health, develop employees' passions and skills, and increase work safety and comfort.
The impact of the workplace on the health and satisfaction of employees
Wellness begins at the office furnishing level. The ergonomics of the workplace, the impact of machines on health, lighting, colors and even the smell in the office are important. Relaxation zones, dining rooms, a terrace or garden, plants and music are also important.
According to the research of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, 18% of Poles experience stress very often in the workplace, while another 33% experience stress at work quite often. The cost of work-related stress in the European Union is estimated at EUR 20 billion per year. In addition, we are dealing with a progressive aging of societies, which means that there will be fewer and fewer economically active people. HR experts predict that the times of fighting for the employee and keeping him in the company will come. Corporate wellness can make the employer's image more attractive to employees. In addition, it can be an opportunity for greater team integration, better knowledge of employees. People who know each other only from the office suddenly have the opportunity to get to know each other from a completely new angle.
It is worth noting that a satisfied employee, who cares about the balance between personal and professional life, has 16% greater productivity, is 32% more engaged in work and experiences 46% greater job satisfaction. In addition, it has over 130% lower susceptibility to burnout (according to the Creating Sustainable Performance study conducted in January 2012).
Ways of implementing corporate wellness in the company
Corporate wellness can encompass a wide variety of activities. The packages may concern the development of competences needed at work, physical and mental health, medical and dietary consultations, as well as the development of passion and bonds between employees.
