The Trail of the Eagles' Nests

Before we suggest which of the castles are definitely worth visiting, it is worth mentioning what the Trail of the Eagles' Nests on which they are located actually is.

In 1927, Stanisław Leszczyński in the journal Ziemia proposed to create a route between Krakow and Częstochowa. Already 3 years later, the red trail was marked out from Krakow through the Ojcowski Plateau and Garb Tęczyński, which then returned to Krakow. Unfortunately, it was not cared for, nobody was involved in restoring it, so it inevitable that it was finally forgotten, although it was certainly very picturesque.

Tourists, however, did not want these areas to be overlooked and forgotten, so in 1948 this idea was revived. Kazimierz Sosnowski, a sightseeing expert, tried again to map the route. He obtained funds for this purpose from the Ministry of Communications, and therefore, in 1950, a hiking trail was finally established. Its length was 163.9 kilometers, and the route ran from Kraków to Częstochowa. However, it was not its final shape.

The route has been modified many times, although in fact what was originally established was not changed very visibly. The main idea was to make this route as attractive as possible for tourists. This is how the Trail of the Eagles' Nests was created.

The Trail of the Eagles' Nests owes its name to the many castles and ruins of castles on its route. They were largely erected on the tops of hills, and around them were limestone rocks that were difficult to access. This is why these castles were called the Eagles' Nests.

It is worth mentioning, however, that the castles of the Trail of the Eagles' Nests are not the only things worth seeing while hiking this route. It is an extremely interesting route in terms of nature, but also, for example, sacred buildings or unusual products of nature (it is worth mentioning the Mace of Hercules, which is certainly is known to almost everyone).

The fact that the trail is pedestrian and is more than 160 kilometers long can be a deterrent. It is worth noting, however, that not only hiking enthusiasts will find something for themselves on the route. It is constantly modernized and therefore it can also be easily traveled by bike. You can also climb or ski on the trail - everyone will find an activity that is perfect for themselves.

On the route, there are also numerous places where you can spend the night, stop and rest. It is also worth noting that in 2012 the Trail of the Eagles' Nests received the Gold Certificate of the Polish Tourist Organization, which means that it is the best tourist product in our country.
